Pearls as gifts

I have obtained pearls as gifts a few times, and did not know why. How can I get more gifts of pearls? Does being in a certain place like with lowland and mountain tiles you must be near tile generator?

It is totally random but the chance supposed to be higher when traveling according to GMs.

Same as the supporting units still maintain your blacksmith upgrades rumour. Not proven but said somewhere by someone who should know it.
